Why use YouPlanIt Classroom?

Students plan their own lessons.
A lot of time can be wasted planning lessons that don’t reflect the learning journey of our students.  The reason is, learning is not linear, it is very much an organic experience.  Student learning changes as they develop understanding, personal experiences change their thinking and they begin to formulate ideas and ask leading questions.  YPI is designed to capture these questions. Thus, learning is driven by curiosity, not a prescriptive task set by teachers.  Of course, there will always be tasks that the students need to learn that are set by the teacher but these can complement the overall learning journey. 

Self-Assessment
YPI self-assessments are deeply embedded in the New Zealand Curriculum.  Students are always able to access the self-assessment rubrics to drive their own learning and YPI provides a transparent pathway to mastery.  Because the self-assessments are so critical in reflecting the students’ learning we have enabled them to be modified to meet individual targets and support student's personal goals for learning.

Self-assessment features include:

1. New Zealand Curriculum requirements
2. Learning outcomes for specific skills and learning areas of any chosen topic
3. Teachers can create own criteria for self-assessment
4. Hide or view feature that allows the teacher to limit how much a student sees in the rubric. (some students may feel overwhelmed by too much content)
5. Reflect student’s self-assessment
6. Reflects teacher assessment on the same rubric but in a different colour
7. Allow for teacher conferencing and setting new targets for the next plan
8. Self-assessment rubric results are placed onto the New Zealand Curriculum Years and Curriculum Levels (see page 45 of the New Zealand Curriculum)
9. A cumulative report of students’ work is graphed as the students complete each subject

New Zealand Curriculum Reporting
YPI captures the learning journey and feeds this into the New Zealand Curriculum as the students complete their work.  Because everything is instantly accessible and traceable all work can be recorded, reflected on and are recorded against the New Zealand Curriculum.  Student outcomes are broader, accurate, and provide a true reflection of the learning journey while fulfilling the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum in ‘real-time’.  No assumptions, no tricks, just plain honest reporting with reliable evidence.

External testing, such as ‘PAT’ etc. may no longer be needed because students have the most accurate measure of competency through the work they present. 
We know that testing is often carried out under stressful conditions (even when students are prepared well) and lack context.  For this reason, testing does not reflect the students’ real capabilities. Placing them in a disadvantaged position for future learning.

Students will notify you of any plans they have created, (including resources, learning intentions, success criteria and groups within this plan), request for help, feedback, invites, messages to their teacher.
